Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis helleri) today!

One of the hazards of photographing local wildflowers and insects is the venomous <b>Southern Pacific Rattlesnake</b> (<i>Crotalus viridis helleri</i>) - "la serpiente de cascabel". They look and sound nasty, and I always jump when I hear one rattling - it's such an electrifying sound. But I just give them plenty of room - except for the occasional close photo. Who would guess that they have such purple tongues! (Santa Ynez Valley, 16 March 2010)

This is an impressive snake. I count 14 rings on it's rattle, so it's been around a few years. That doesn't tell how old they are (they're not trees), but how many times they've shed their skin at a rate of several times a year.

I found this snake today on a trail near Lake Cachuma on my way to school. One group was hiking back down the trail and asked if there's another way out - there isn't - and another group on the other side turned back when they heard the snake rattle. Me? I went in close for the photo!

Rattlesnakes are no big deal - just don't step on them. They don't like that!

MYKOLOGOS is a group site for photos of mushrooms, fungi, molds, lichens, slime molds, bacterial mats, algae - all those non-flowering plants that don`t follow the usual rules. I figure ferns are marginal unless they show their sporangia.
